Universal seems to do this more than any other studio, earlier this year it was The Purge that popped up on the radar out of nowhere and now it’s a remake of Endless Love, the 1981 romantic drama starring Brooke Shields and Martin Hewitt, which, more than anything, is probably memorable for the Diana Ross and Lionel Richie title song, or the fact it was an early Tom Cruise feature. Either way, I’m not sure what kind of success I envision with Alex Pettyfer (Magic Mike) and Gabriella Wilde (The Three Musketeers) in the lead roles, but have at it Universal.
Making things even more dicey, the film was written and directed by Shana Feste whose previous efforts include The Greatest and Country Strong, neither of which would I ever recommend anyone see.
The story follows a privileged girl and a charismatic boy whose instant desire sparks a love affair made only more reckless by parents trying to keep them apart.
Universal has set a Valentine’s Day release date for the pic, pitting it against a murderer’s row of anticipated mediocrity in About Last Night, Three Days to Kill, Vampire Academy: Blood Sisters and Winter’s Tale. Hard to really get excited about anything in that bunch.
