I missed Blue is the Warmest Color at the this year’s Cannes Film Festival, largely because it’s three hours long and I just couldn’t fit it into the day and am worried I’m going to run into the same issue in Toronto, which is why I started putting feelers out today to try and get a screener or hopefully a screening here in Seattle before I head off to Toronto. What’s up Sundance Selects? You only like critics in L.A.?
The film won the top prize in Cannes and will hit domestic theaters on October 25 so it isn’t like it’s years off, but for those of you thinking it might be a contender in the Best Foreign Language race this year, guess again, it’s going to miss the release window so if it will have to wait until next year if it wants that prize.
Directed by Abdellatif Kechiche, the film stars Léa Seydoux and Adèle Exarchopoulos, the latter as 15-year-old Adele whose life is changed forever when she meets Emma, a young woman with blue hair, who will allow her to discover desire, to assert herself as a woman and as an adult. You’ll see the film referred to as the “lesbian film” in many corners and it has an explicit sex scene that runs approximately ten minutes long that had everyone in Cannes talking.
Now I offer you the first trailer for the film (which is not safe for work), which arrives without subtitles, though hopefully one with subs arrives as the Toronto organizers have been delivering in that department as of late.
