Talk about under the radar, Sony Pictures debuted the first trailer for Sparkle three days ago and only today is it coming to our attention. The film features the final performance of the late Whitney Houston opposite pop star Jordin Sparks and is directed by Jumping the Broom helmer, Salim Akil.
In the film, Sparks plays the titular character, a musical prodigy who is struggling to become a star while overcoming issues that are tearing her family apart. From an affluent Detroit area and daughter to a single mother (Houston), she tries to balance a new romance with music manager, Stix (Derek Luke) while dealing with the unexpected challenges her new life will bring as she and her two sisters (Carmen Ejogo and Tika Sumpter) strive to become a dynamic singing group during the Motown-era. Additional members of the cast include Mike Epps, Omari Hardwick and Ceelo Green.
Sparkle is set to hit theaters on August 17 and you can check out the trailer directly below.
