We first heard about Planes, a spin-off to Disney and Pixar’s Cars films, back in July 2010 and it was then officially announced this past February. Well, now it has become a living, breathing, moving piece of cinema… or at least a teaser trailer.
Walt Disney Pictures just released the teaser trailer for Planes, which is a direct-to-DVD and Blu-ray feature from DisneyToon Studios and not Pixar, despite the fact it is a spin-off from Cars. The film takes off with an international cast of the fastest air racers around, in a comedy packed with action and adventure starring Dusty, a small town dreamer who longs to enter the most epic around-the-world air race … despite his fear of heights. With the help and support of a fleet of new and hilarious characters, Dusty wings his way into the biggest challenge of his life.
Now, while this isn’t a feature related to Pixar, and is likely Disney’s attempt to continue the direct-to-video success they’ve found with their Tinker Bell films, Cars and Cars 2 director John Lasseter, who is also Chief Creative Officer for Walt Disney and Pixar Animation Studios, was quoted earlier saying, “We had such a great time exploring the world of Cars over the course of two films, so it seemed only natural for us to see where our imaginations would take us in a film where planes were the main characters. By expanding the Cars world, Planes gave us a whole new set of fun-filled situations and a great opportunity to introduce some fantastic new characters.”
