Universal just debuted the first trailer for Larry Crowne, which marks Tom Hanks sophomore effort as a feature film director. Co-written by Hanks and Nia Vardalos, Crowne features Hanks as the title character who’s just been laid off from his longtime position and now faces a large debt and the daunting task of starting over. He decides to head back to college where he develops a crush on his public-speaking teacher (Julia Roberts), who, of course, has lost her passion for her job and her marriage.

Larry Crowne hits theaters on July 1 making for a bit of counter-programming opposite Transformers: Dark of the Moon and Fox’s comedy Monte Carlo.
