Like a blow to the head Apple has unsuspectingly debuted the trailer for Terrence Malick’s The Tree of Life with absolutely no warning along with the poster you see to the right. Just as I thought the DVD and Blu-ray release date of The Social Network would interest people this makes that news pale in comparison.
Malick’s Tree of Life will be released by Fox Searchlight on May 27 as it follows the life journey of the eldest son, Jack, through the innocence of childhood to his disillusioned adult years as he tries to reconcile a complicated relationship with his father (Brad Pitt). Jack (played as an adult by Sean Penn) finds himself a lost soul in the modern world, seeking answers to the origins and meaning of life while questioning the existence of faith. Through Malick’s signature imagery, we see how both brute nature and spiritual grace shape not only our lives as individuals and families, but all life.
The Tree of Life stars Brad Pitt, Sean Penn, Jessica Chastain, Fiona Shaw and Pell James.
The film is expected to hit the Cannes Film Festival prior to release, which is where I hope to see it for the first time, but for now the trailer is all we have to go by. Enjoy.
