Dark Horizons was recently lucky enough to get a sneak preview of the Zack Snyder Watchmen traveling road show down in Australia where the half-hour preview of the film that made the rounds in New York and Los Angeles recently was screened featuring a few segments from the film including an opening credits montage, the origin of Dr. Manhattan (Billy Crudup), the opening Comedian attack scene and more notably a later jailbreak scene. The site also sat down with Snyder where he told them he was pretty much done with the film outside of some post-production effects and other late-in-the-game details including finishing up work on the branching “Black Freighter” sequence which will be available on the director’s cut DVD and Blu-ray discs.
Snyder told the site the final run time on the theatrical version of the film looks like it will be “2 hours 42 minutes, with credits” assuming the MPAA doesn’t ask him to hatchet any of it out. However, the director’s cut is expected to be three hours long and once you throw the “Black Freighter” into the mix he says you should expect a three-and-a-half hour feature.
As for what fans will see soon, he talks of the second trailer, which will be released in theaters with Quantum of Solace on November 14. He detailed the trailer saying the following:
Snyder says “I just saw the final version of it this morning… it’s a little bit more story, a teeny bit more like a full trailer. This is much more like ‘someone’s picking off costume heroes’. You’ll get a sense of the characters plight you know, ‘we were supposed to make the world a better place… what happened to the American Dream’.” Some elements have had to be changed for the trailer, most notably Dr. Manhattan’s exposed genitals have had to be ‘defocused’ to be granted approval by the MPAA. He also confirms a third trailer will hit early in the new year.
The rest of the interview also talks about Snyder’s song choices (lots of Dylan), more on the fight scenes, the recent controversy of the changed ending and much more. Give the full thing a read right here.
