What is Thelma the Unicorn about?

“Thelma is a small-time pony who dreams of becoming a glamourous music star. In a pink and glitter-filled moment of fate, Thelma is transformed into a unicorn and instantly rises to global stardom. But this new life of fame comes at a cost. Thelma the Unicorn is a quirky, hilarious, and heartfelt ride from directors Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite) and Lynn Wang (Unikitty!),” the official synopsis reads.

Hess co-wrote the script for Thelma the Unicorn with his wife Jerusha Hess. Jared and Jerusha previously wrote the scripts for 2004’s Napoleon Dynamite, 2006’s Nacho Libre, 2009’s Gentlemen Broncos, and 2015’s Don Verdean, all of which were directed by Jared.

Jared is also directing the live-action Minecraft movie starring Jack Black and Jason Momoa, which releases in United States theaters on April 4, 2025.

The voice cast for Thelma the Unicorn includes Brittany Howard, Will Forte (The Last Man on Earth, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off), Jemaine Clement (Avatar: The Way of Water, What We Do in the Shadows), Edi Patterson (The Righteous Gemstones), Maliaka Mitchell, Ally Dixon (The Croods: Family Tree), Fred Armisen (Wednesday, Documentary Now!), Zach Galifianakis (The Hangover, The Bob’s Burgers Movie) and Jon Heder (Napoleon Dynamite, Blades of Glory).
