What is Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead about?

“Seventeen-year-old Tanya Crandell’s plans for a carefree summer are derailed when her stressed-to-the-limit mom takes off for a wellness retreat and puts Tanya and her three siblings in the charge of a crotchety (and racist) old babysitter,” reads the synopsis. “The babysitter’s sudden death leaves the kids short on cash and reluctant to pull mom prematurely out of her much-needed R&R, so Tanya is forced to get a job. Posing as an adult, she gets a gig as the executive assistant at a fashion company and overnight is thrust into the world of adulthood and parenting.”

Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead is directed by Wade Allain-Marcus from a screenplay written by Chuck Hayward. The remake also stars Jermaine Fowler, Simone Joy Jones, Donielle Hansley Jr., Ayaamii Sledge, Carter Young, Miles Fowler, Gus Kenworthy, Tyriq Withers, and more. It is produced by Juliet Berman, Juliana Maio, Justin Nappi, and Oren Segal, with Tyra Banks set as an executive producer. It hails from Treehouse Pictures, Lighthouse Productions, SMiZE Productions, and BET Studios.

The original movie starred Emmy winner Christina Applegate as Sue Ellen Crandell. Despite receiving negative reviews and a poor box office performance, the film still garnered a cult following after it was released on VHS and cable television.
