Miranda portrayed the lead role of Usnavi in the Broadway musical and also wrote the music and lyrics. The musical won four major awards at the 2008 Tony Awards including Best Musical, Best Original Score, and Best Choreography. It also earned a Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album.

In the Heights was originally scheduled for a 2020 and then a June 18 release, but will now be released on HBO Max on June 11. The last release date pitted the film against Disney-Pixar’s newest animated film Luca, while its new release date sets Chu’s musical as counter-programming to The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It.
