Spiral: From the Book of Saw Trailer: A New Game Begins

On the heels of announcing a May release date and a series of chilling new character posters for the latest installment in the iconic horror franchise, Lionsgate has debuted the official trailer for Spiral: From the Book of Saw, teasing that a new game is beginning! The trailer, which can be viewed below, also sees further references to where the film sits in the overall storyline of the series, addressing John Kramer, aka Jigsaw’s, demise in the past films and even showing a photo of Tobin Bell’s character and teasing a number of main characters in grave danger of being in the terrifying new game itself, including stars Chris Rock and Samuel L. Jackson.

“With movie theaters now open in New York and Los Angeles and moviegoers returning to their favorite pastime, Spiral, starring Chris Rock and Samuel L. Jackson, puts a fresh spin on a favorite franchise,” David Spitz, Lionsgate President of Distribution, previously said in a statement. “We know that Saw fans, as well as those experiencing their first Saw adventure, will be on the edge of their seats with this thrilling new film. We are proud to support the exhibitors with one of our most eagerly awaited films. We are confident this film will kick off a robust summer moviegoing season.”

In the latest chapter of the Saw franchise, Rock stars as Ezekiel “Zeke” Banks, a brash detective working in the shadow of his esteemed police veteran father (Jackson) and must take charge of a grisly investigation into a series of murders eerily reminiscent of the city’s gruesome past alongside his rookie partner William Schenk (Max Minghella).

Alongside Rock, who wrote the story treatment for the film, Jackson and Minghella, the cast for the film includes Marisol Nichols (Riverdale, 24) as Captain Angie Garza, Banks’ boss, and Zoie Palmer (Dark Matter, Wynonna Earp) in the unknown role of Kara Boswick.

Spiral was originally set to release in May of 2020, but was bumped a full year in the wake of the COVID pandemic to May 21, but with theaters now opening around the globe and the studios and audiences hoping this summer can revert back to some semblance of normalcy, it has elected to move up the film a week.

The film is produced by longtime Saw producers Mark Burg and Oren Koules – who are back once again to shepherd this re-imagining, which hails from director Darren Lynn Bousman, who helmed the first three sequels of the Saw franchise, also three of the most financially successful. The screenplay is based on a story conceived by Rock and written by Pete Goldfinger and Josh Stolberg, who made their franchise debut with the 2017 revival Jigsaw. The film is executive produced by Chris Rock, long-time Saw executive producer Daniel Heffner and the original creators of Saw, James Wan and Leigh Whannell.
