Oxygen Trailer: Mélanie Laurent Leads Alexandre Aja’s Netflix Thriller

While gearing up to return to the horror genre for Searchlight Pictures’ Elijah, Netflix has unveiled the first trailer for Alexandre Aja’s long-in-development thriller Oxygen starring Mélanie Laurent (6 Underground, Inglorious Basterds) as an amnesiac racing against time to save her own life. Penned by Christie LeBlanc (How to Make a Reality Star), the film tells the story of a young woman, who wakes up in a cryogenic pod. She doesn’t remember who she is or how she ended up there. As she’s running out of oxygen, she must rebuild her memory to find a way out of her nightmare.

Alongside Laurent, the cast for the isolated thriller includes Mathieu Amalric (The Grand Budapest Hotel, The French Dispatch) and Malik Zidi (The Assistant, Marie Curie: The Courage of Knowledge). When the film was first announced as being in development under the title O2 in July 2017, Anne Hathaway (The Witches) had signed on to star in the central role and produce the project, but as it languished in development hell, she would eventually depart and Noomi Rapace (What Happened to Monday) signed on to replace her in early 2020 and Aja signing on as producer.

A few months later, Aja would elect to step into the director’s chair, replacing Franck Khalfoun (P2, Maniac), and Laurent signed on to replace Rapace with Amalric and Zidi. In addition to directing, Aja is serving as producer alongside Vincent Maraval (French Exit), Brahim Chioua (Climax) and Noëmie Devide (Spring Breakers) for Getaway Films and frequent collaborator Grégory Levasseur (The Pyramid, Crawl), with Adam Riback and James Engle executive producing via their Echo Lake Entertainment banner.
