Spielberg Talks Potential Goonies Sequel During Reunited Apart with Josh Gad

Earlier today Josh Gad reunited the cast and creators of The Goonies during his first episode of Reunited Apart, a new program seeking to reunite favorite casts as well as raise money for charity. The full episode is available to watch below!

Hosted by Gad, every episode of Reunited Apart will showcase one of the many incredible charities working to provide resources to those most desperate for them during these incredibly difficult times. The Goonies reunion episode is focused on raising funds for The Center for Disaster Philanthropy.

During this episode, Gad welcomed The Goonies Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, Kerri Green, Corey Feldman, Ke Huy Quan, Martha Plimpton, Jeff Cohen, Robert Davi, Joe Pantoliano, singer Cindy Lauper, writer Chris Columbus, director Richard Donner, and producer Steven Spielberg.

At one point during Reunited Apart, Spielberg revealed that they have had “a lot of conversations” about a potential sequel to The Goonies, saying that every couple of years they have come up with an idea, but they haven’t “been able to find an idea that is better than The Goonies that we all made in the 80s.”

Following the reunion, Adam F. Golberg (The Goldbergs, Schooled) revealed on Twitter that for the last nine years he has been secretly writing Part 2 of The Goonies for fun. You can check out his post below!

It was recently announced that Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Television is bringing back the beloved story in the form of a new untitled drama series after receiving an official pilot order by FOX. The series will feature a group of aspiring young filmmakers as they attempt to recreate The Goonies shot-by-shot.

The Goonies was written by Chris Columbus from a story by Steven Spielberg. Starring Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, Corey Feldman, and Martha Plimpton, the film followed a group of children who calls themselves as The Goonies led by Astin’s Mikey Walsh, who finds a treasure that will lead them to the One-Eyed Willy’s lost treasure. The titular group along with three teenagers consists of Stef, Andy and Mikey’s brother Brand go on an unexpected adventure that are full of booby traps and bad guys.

Since the film’s debut, it has stood the test of time and has become a pop culture staple among all ages. In 2017, the movie was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress. This coming June, the film will be celebrating its 35th anniversary.
