‘Saw’ Movie Review (2004)

With Halloween just around the corner our first weekend leading up to the holiday gives us a creepy film called The Grudge, but what would the holidays be without a little bit of gore on top of all the scary fun?

Lions Gate Films has the answer to what you are looking for in a little film called Saw in which two men suddenly find themselves chained at the foot in one of the most disgusting rooms you could ever find yourself in. As a dead body lay still in the middle of the room holding a .38 in his hand the men learn their fate thanks to tape recordings left in their pockets.

The two men are Adam (Whannell) and Dr. Gordon (Elwes) and based on what the recordings have told them Dr. Gordon learns that he must kill Adam within eight hours or his wife (Potter) and daughter will be killed. Clues in the recording force the two men to work together to get out of their predicament and through the use of pictures, cigarettes and even a hacksaw this one builds up to an ending you would have never predicted.

The driver at the wheel to this sick game is soon revealed as a psychopathic killer named “Jigsaw” who seems to kidnap people and force them into predicaments where they either end up killing themselves or someone else to escape, and if you thought the contraption in the poster was freaky just wait until you see the scene it is used in.

Saw also brings back to the big screen Danny Glover, who wedged his way into cinematic history with the popular Lethal Weapon series, but this time he is back as police detective Tapp, who is hot on the trail of the “Jigsaw” killer and assumes Dr. Gordon to be his prime suspect. Little does he know Dr. Gordon may just be eliminated from the running.

Saw is a creepy, blood filled horror that if it wasn’t for Cary Elwes HORRIBLE acting may have earned an A, but that really doesn’t hurt this one from being a timeless classic that could easily spawn just as creepy of sequels, which may just place “Jigsaw” in the same category as Freddy and Jason… Now wouldn’t that be the match up?
