‘Laws of Attraction’ Movie Review (2004)

I was extremely skeptical walking into see Laws of Attraction because I wasn’t quite sure just how well Pierce Brosnan and Julianne Moore would be able to work together, since they both have such different characteristics, but I was soon whown why they get paid the big bucks.

Both, Brosnan and Moore, carry off their roles with expertise and deliver a comedy filled flick with heart. Granted it isn’t without your everyday cliche moments but the two of them pull off the personalities of their characters so well that it is believable.

Laws of Attraction follows Audrey Woods (Moore) and Daniel Rafferty (Brosnan), two divorce attorneys who spend their lives examining cases of love gone wrong. Daniel is a charismatic play-it-dirty lawyer, while Audrey is a by the book attorney who frowns on Daniel’s lifestyle, but soon finds herself being swept of her feet without a net to catch her.

Julianne Moore pulls off the neurotic, wound up tight woman perfectly and her appreciation for the Weather Channel and order is the perfect compliment to Daniel Rafferty’s cluttered lifestyle and fast-talking antics making every scene a courtroom dance in and outside of the courts as Brosnan lends a vague familiarity to the charm exhumed by Richard Gere in Chicago.

While this isn’t a movie that is going to sweep the box office it is good and it is nice to see romantic comedies when they are done right. Just as last year when Jack Nicholson and Diane Keaton put together the year’s best romantic comedy in Something’s Gotta Give this one doesn’t lag too far behind.
