‘The Girl Next Door’ Movie Review (2004)

Who hasn’t dreamt of having that beautiful girl next door? The only thing is I don’t think I could have ever imagined a girl as beautiful as Elisha Cuthbert looks in this film. I cannot stress this enough, she is the ultimate eye candy as there is not a single scene where she looks bad, she is 100% flawless, unfortunately the movie doesn’t exactly share the same qualities.

Now, before you go thinking this is a bad review let me tell you it is not, it just had its flaws, for lack of a better word.

If you are looking for the raunchy teen comedy that we have all come to expect from these types of films you aren’t exactly going to get. Now of course with the fact that Danielle (Cuthbert) is an ex-pornstar trying to change her life around and get on the right track there is bound to be tons of sexual innuendos and so forth but on top of that the story centers around Matthew (Hirsch) as Danielle is now house sitting the house next door and he immediately falls for her.

Matthew has lived his life on the straight and narrow and now with the introduction of Danielle into the mix things are about to change, which leads into the film’s underlying slogan; “How far are you willing to go for the person you love?”

The one big kink in Matthew’s goal of wooing Danielle is her agent Kelly, played by Timothy Olyphant, as he stands as the wall between him and Danielle despite his initial charm.

With a great group of characters including Matthew’s friends there is little room for the movie to fail until it manages to overstay its welcome. The film is far too long for what it has to offer and the story soon starts to run thin, which is unfortunate as we get to what turns out to be quite an original ending, but by the time we get to it we have had to suffer through too many scenes that should have made it to the cutting room floor, available for a section on the DVD.

There is no doubt that the beauty of Elisha Cuthbert will draw in audiences, but I don’t expect it to make a lasting box office impression despite the fact there is a lot to love about The Girl Next Door.
