‘NASCAR 3D: The IMAX Experience’ Movie Review (2004)

Let me start off by telling you that I am not a NASCAR fan in the sense that I cannot sit and watch those cars going around and around for hours on end. I also don’t have the interest in learning the intricacies that go into racing, but I can also tell you that this film is great!

If you have any kind of interest in the things that make racing great, i.e. emotions, winning, competition, and NOISE then you are going to enjoy this 45 minute trip around the track as NASCAR 3D: The IMAX Experience goes over the history of NASCAR and its racers from birth to present day.

With this film you are able to see the sport of NASCAR from many different perspectives such as the back seat of the car, the race track itself and from the fan’s perspective, every angle gives you just that little bit of extra insight that lets you know just how much the fans love this sport and why.

To go along with the imagery the narration by Kiefer Sutherland takes you into the many race shops around the States detailing what it takes to make a race car work by going over the science of racing technology, the machines and the underlying physics that drivers depend on to make turns at the highest speeds while skillfully maneuvering within inches of their competitors.

At some points it can get a bit tedious, primarily because you want to get back behind the wheel, but your view of the film will all be relative to your interest in the sport and will then be heightened through the magic of 3-D.

If you have any doubt on what the film will mean to race fans just hear what Jeff Gordon said, “Watching this film sent a chill up my spine…It really captures the roar, the thunder, the essence of our sport onscreen. This is NASCAR for real.”

This is NASCAR for real and will be most enjoyed by true NASCAR fans and the people interested in sitting shotgun while roaring around the race track, but for others the historical points of the film might just get a little too boring and those heavy IMAX 3-D glasses may get a little burdensome.
