‘Brother Bear’ Movie Review (2003)

Disney has done it again despite a couple of items that just may have parents explaining death to their children and have the kids asking, “Who is that?” Brother Bear is a fun ride through the forest.

Brother Bear follows Kenai (Phoenix) and his Native American family whose lives take an unexpected turn when Kenai’s brother Sitka is forced to spare his own life to save his two brothers from an attacking bear.

In an attempt to make sure Sitka’s death is not in vain he sets out to kill the bear. Without giving away too much more of the story Kenai’s life becomes a bit different once the Great Spirits transform him into a bear and he sets out on a journey of courage, honor and self-discovery.

The Brother Bear story is a bit lacking in meaning and value, but it isn’t the story that carries this movie it is the colorful characters Kenai meets on his way

to regaining his human form.

Now being that this movie has already been released in New York and LA I have had a chance to read some of the reviews that have been posted. Many of these have been negative and after reading some of them I don’t quite get it. Do these people not realize that a Disney animated film is not only about the storyline. Children fall in love with the characters and that is what happens in Brother Bear.

Character development is great and while the ending may be a little corny, even for an animated flick, the characters along the way are instantly memorable from the two rams confused by the echo in the mountains to the lovable Koda (Suarez).

The most memorable characters are that of the two moose I am sure many of you have seen in the trailers. Played by the stars of the 1983 beer fest Strange Brew the two Canadian moose steal the show as follow Kenai and his new bear cub friend Koda.

Don’t be swayed by any negative reviews Brother Bear is a great flick with tons of laughs and some emotion at the end. Your kids will love it and so will you.
