Marvel Nixes 40-year Old Captain Marvel Origin Story

Marvel nixes Captain Marvel’s 40-year old origin story

Marvel Comics is retconning the long-running Captain Marvel origin story. In a move that likely coincides with the more audience friendly take on the character set to hit theaters this Spring, the fourth issue of the “Life of Captain Marvel” series by Margaret Stohl, Carlos Pacheco and Erica D’Urso has revealed that the titular hero did not gain superpowers through exposure to an alien device via an accident related to the male Captain Marvel, as depicted in 1977’s Ms. Marvel No. 2, but has actually been a member of alien race the Kree all along.

Apparently, according to The Hollywood Reporter, “the Psyche-Magnetron, instead of altering Carol’s DNA, ‘activated’ Carol’s inherent superpowers, making them in her mother’s words, “not borrowed. Not a gift. Not an accident.”

There you have it. Captain Marvel’s 40-year origin story is now defunct. Will this follow the origin story we see in the film? We’ll just have to wait until March to find out.

Captain Marvel follows Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) as she becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes when Earth is caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races. Set in the 1990s, The feature is an all-new adventure from a previously unseen period in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

It is directed by the writing/directing team of Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, whose credits include Mississippi Grind and Half Nelson. An all-star collective of accomplished writers penned the screenplay, including Meg LeFauve (Inside OutThe Good Dinosaur), Nicole Perlman (First ManGuardians of the Galaxy), Geneva Robertson-Dworet (Tomb Raider, upcoming Sherlock Holmes 3), Liz Flahive & Carly Mensch (Glow) and Anna Boden & Ryan Fleck.
