New Conjuring Universe Film Among Warner Bros. Upcoming Horror Projects

WB Sets Horror Movie Release Dates for September 2020, ’21 & ’22

Warner Bros. Pictures has revealed three new release dates for upcoming projects, all of them falling in the horror genre. An untitled Conjuring Universe film will be released on September 11, 2020, followed by an untitled New Line horror film releasing on September 10, 2021, and finally, an untitled New Line horror film debuting on September 9, 2022.

The new trend is thanks to massive hits like IT and the latest The Conjuring Universe installment The NunIT debuted in September of last year to the tune of $123.1 million on opening weekend, the highest opening weekend ever for a September release, for a fall release, and for a horror movie. It clocked in just $9 million behind Deadpool for the second-highest opening for an R-rated movie. The film earned over $700 million at the worldwide box office, making it the highest-grossing horror movie of all time.

The Nun scared the competition away around the world and set a franchise record for The Conjuring series when it opened to $53.5 million domestically and added another $77.5 internationally for a worldwide total of $131 million. Previously the highest opening of the series came from the first Conjuring movie which opened in July of 2013 to the tune of $41.8 million, which still falls short of The Nun‘s debut when factoring in inflation adjustments.

The Conjuring spin-off now sits at $109 million domestically and has crossed the $300 million mark worldwide for a total of $330 million. The Nun is now the highest grossing entry in The Conjuring franchise, beating out The Conjuring 2 by over $10 million and counting. Directed by Corin Hardy, the film stars Demian BichirTaissa Farmiga, Jonas Bloquet, Charlotte Hope, Ingrid Bisu, and Bonnie Aarons, reprising her Conjuring 2 role as the title character.
