Cary Joji Fukunaga to direct James Bond 25, set for 2020 debut

Following the departure of director Danny Boyle and an intense search for a replacement, producers Michael G. Wilson, Barbara Broccoli and Daniel Craig announced today that filmmaker Cary Joji Fukunaga (True Detective, Beasts of No Nation) will step behind the camera for the 25th James Bond movie. Production on the film will begin on March 4, 2019 for a February 14, 2020 release date, marking the first time a Bond film has been released in February.

“We are delighted to be working with Cary. His versatility and innovation make him an excellent choice for our next James Bond adventure,” said Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli.

Fukunaga has previously flirted with major studio movies, having been signed on to direct Warner Bros. IT before departing the project. His other credits include 2011’s Jane Eyre, his debut feature Sin Nombre, and the upcoming Netflix dark comedy series Maniac, all 10 episodes of which he directed.

EON Productions and Metro Goldwyn Mayer Studios (MGM) recently reached an agreement with Universal Pictures to partner on the worldwide release of the 25th James Bond film. Daniel Craig will return as 007, the legendary British secret agent.

The 24th James Bond film, Spectre, opened in U.S. theaters on November 16, 2015. The film earned $200 million domestically and $680.6 million internationally, for a worldwide total of $880.7 million.
