Actor Jack Klugman Dead at 90

It’s being reported by the Associated Press and other sources that actor Jack Klugman, best known for his roles on the television shows “The Odd Couple” and “Quincy M.E.,” passed away on Monday, December 24, at the age of 90, in Los Angeles with his wife by his side.

Klugman was a mainstay on television from its early days in the ’50s, working regularly with the late Tony Randall. After appearing on stage together in Neil Simon’s “The Odd Couple,” they brought the concept to television for it to become Klugman’s first award-winning hit. Klugman was nominated for ten Primetime Emmys, winning three times, twice for “The Odd Couple,” as well as winning a Golden Globe for his portrayal of the gruff Oscar Madison on the show. Klugman followed that with the equally successful “Quincy M.E.” from 1976 to 1983, playing a medical examiner that solved crimes.

Klugman also appeared in the 1957 film 12 Angry Men directed by Sidney Lumet, which was nominated for three Oscars, followed by Days of Wine and Roses in 1962, and Goodbye, Columbus in 1969.

Klugman was afflicted by throat cancer in 1974 and lost one of his vocal cords to cancer in 1989 but worked on getting his voice back enough to continue doing stage and television work.

Klugman is survived by his two sons Adam and David and their families.

Earlier this year, Scott Feinberg of The Hollywood Reporter had a chance to sit down with the actor shortly after his 90th birthday for an extensive discussion about his career, which you can watch here.
