How The Deadpool 2 Team Convinced Matt Damon To Do A Cameo

Writer Reveals How The Deadpool 2 Matt Damon Cameo Happened

With all the over-the-top hijinks and easter eggs in Deadpool 2, it’s easy to overlook one noteworthy cameo: Oscar-winner Matt Damon. Now, thanks to one of the special features on the movie’s Blu Ray release (via CinemaBlend), we know how the Deadpool 2 team convinced Matt Damon to make an appearance.

It started when co-writer Rhett Reese (Zombieland) was doing a comedy bit for star Ryan Reynolds about the “inadequacy of toilet paper to create the appropriate hygiene for a human being.” After the two of them decided they needed to work that into the movie somehow, they decided they needed an “Oscar-caliber” actor to deliver such a speech. Reynolds reached out to Damon, who liked the script, and the rest is movie history.

Matt was very receptive so Ryan ended up sending him the pages. Matt called him back and said ‘I’m in.'”

Damon, who eventually appeared in the film as a redneck, was unrecognizable to the rest of the crew due to his prosthetics and costume. Damon even took the monologue to heart, according to co-writer Paul Wernick (GI Joe: Retaliation), who said that “Matt’s now a wet wipes guy himself after he read the pages.” Sometimes, life truly does imitate art.

Directed by David Leitch, Ryan Reynolds reprises his role as the Merc with a Mouth alongside Zazie Beetz (Atlanta) as the luck-manipulating mutant Domino and Josh Brolin (Avengers: Infinity War) as Cable, the time-traveling son of the X-Men’s Cyclops. Jack Kesy (The StrainBaywatch) stars as Black Tom, with Japanese actress Shioli Kutsuna and Julian Dennison (Hunt for the Wilderpeople) playing Yukio and Firefist.
