Alpha Secures Release Date in China

Variety reports that Sony Pictures and Studio 8’s Alpha is heading for a theatrical release in mainland China. The film is expected to release in the country on September 7, just three weeks after it debuts in domestic theaters.

Alpha is an epic adventure set in the last Ice Age. Europe, 20,000 years ago. While on his first hunt, an initiation to his tribe’s most elite group, a young man, Zeta, is injured and left for dead after a bison hunt goes horribly wrong. Awaking to find himself broken, alone, and miles from his village – he must learn to survive and navigate the harsh and unforgiving wilderness. Reluctantly taming a lone wolf, Alpha, abandoned by its pack, the pair learn to rely on each other to hunt and become unlikely allies, enduring countless dangers and overwhelming odds in order to find their way home before the deadly winter arrives.

Kodi Smit-McPhee (X-Men: ApocalypseDawn of the Planet of the Apes) stars in the film alongside Natassia Malthe (Elektra, This Means War), Leonor Varela (Blade IIMarvel’s Agents of Shield), Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson (Game of ThronesAtomic Blonde), Mercedes de la Zerda (War for the Planet of the ApesHemlock Grove), and Jens Hultén (Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation).

Directed by Albert Hughes (Menace II SocietyThe Book of Eli), written by Daniele Sebastian Wiedenhaupt and produced by Albert Hughes and Andrew Rona. Alpha, from Sony Pictures and Studio 8, will be released in theaters nationwide on August 17.
