Neo-noir director Jeremy Saulnier (Green Room, Blue Ruin) sat down with Empire to talk about his upcoming Netflix thriller, Hold the Dark. Among the things Saulnier mentions  is the amount of “blood and guts” in the film and records it has for him, saying:

“This film has so many firsts for me. It has my record number of intimate dialogue scenes and my highest body count. It has my first war scene, my first aerial sequence, my first time working extensively with animals. So in that regard it was a huge challenge.”

In addition, check out the first photo from the film including Alexander Skarsgård’s character, Vernon Sloane and his son Bailey portrayed by Beckham Crawford.

Hold the Dark is an intense tale of fate, family, and revenge set in the remote Alaskan wilderness. When a child is taken from his village by a pack of wolves, an expert hunter is summoned to track and destroy them. His mission leads him down an increasingly dark and shocking path as he confronts the cruelty of nature and his own failures as a man. With the child’s grief-crazed father closing in behind him and a fierce, unforgiving landscape ahead, the question becomes, who is really being hunted? The New York Times has called the novel “extraordinary an unnerving and intimate portrayal of nature gone awry,” and the Boston Globe proclaims that “it stands out as one of the decade’s best books.”

The Netflix film is set to star Jeffrey Wright, Alexander Skarsgård, and James Badge Dale and will be distributed by the popular streaming service on September 28.
