Crowded: Rebel Wilson to produce, star in adaptation of new comic series
The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Rebel Wilson’s Camp Sugar production banner has purchased the film rights to Crowded, a soon to be released new comic book from Image Comics, with the intention of Wilson starring in the film. This will likely be the second film from Camp Sugar, following their upcoming remake of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels starring Wilson and Anne Hathaway titled The Hustle.
Crowded (which is set to be published on August 15th) is written by Christopher Sebela with art by Ro Stein. The comic takes place in a near future Los Angeles, where an app called Reapr that crowdfunds assassinations has become immensely popular. In the story, a normal woman named Charlie Ellison unexpectedly finds herself with a multi-million-dollar bounty on her head and must hire a bounty hunter from the Dfend app to defend her from scores of would be assassins. But, because Charlie is broke, she must hire Vita, the cheapest (and lowest rated) bounty hunter available on the app. Together, the two must fight off those looking to kill Charlie for the money, while figuring out just who it is that wants Charlie dead.
Camp Sugar is actively looking for a screenwriter for the project, but Sebela will act as a consulting producer for the film. Currently Wilson is filming Jojo Rabbit, a Nazi satire film starring Scarlett Johannsen hailing from Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi. Wilson’s next film scheduled for release is Isn’t it Romantic, a comedy about a woman that finds herself knowingly trapped inside of a cliche romantic comedy. It’s set to be released on Valentines Day, 2019.
