Eugenio Derbez in Talks to Join Live-Action Dora the Explorer Movie

The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Mexican superstar Eugenio Derbez is in talks to join the ever growing cast of the live-action adaption of the popular Nickelodeon cartoon series Dora the Explorer. Derbez will be joining Isabela Moner, who has been cast as the titular character. Although Derbez’s character details have not been publicized, Derbez has gained popularity with his comedic talent. Eugenio broke into the United States with independent film Instructions Not Included and has recently co-starred with Anna Ferris in the gender swap remake of Overboard.

Joining Derbez on this film is Walden Media as co-financiers. Walden Media joins Michael Bay’s production company Platinum Dunes on Dora the Explorer. Walden Media has become synonymous with family entertainment by producing films like The Star, Wonder, and the Chronicles of Narnia film series.

Dora the Explorer will follow a teenage Dora on an adventure, accompanied by her best friend, Boots the monkey, and her cousin Diego. James Bobin is tackling directing duties as he reunites with his Muppets writer Nicholas Stoller (Storks, Neighbors), who will pen the script.

Dora the Explorer ran for eight seasons and 172 episodes. The educational series followed Dora and her companion monkey, Boots, as they embarked on quests for treasures while asking the audience for help. The series experienced immense success throughout its 14-year run, including a merchandising empire that consists of toys, books, cosmetics, DVDs and video games, just to name a few. It also spawned the popular spin-off Go, Diego, Go! and continues to be a mainstay in many homes.

Dora the Explorer is set to be released in theaters on August 2, 2019.
