George R.R. Martin's The Ice Dragon to Become Animated Feature

George R.R. Martin’s The Ice Dragon to Become Animated Feature

The Hollywood Reporter has learned that George R.R. Martin’s (Game of Thrones) The Ice Dragon will be getting an animated movie adaptation by Warner Animation Group. Martin will produce the feature, and could possibly write the script though that is yet to be determined. The author is also in the middle of penning the final books in the A Song of Ice and Fire series.

The Ice Dragon, first published in 1980 and later reworked as a children’s book in October 2007, is a children’s fantasy novel that centers on Adara, a young girl who makes a special connection with a feared and mythic ice dragon. When another breed of dragon flies in to destroy her world, the girl and dragon must find a way to stop the invaders.

Martin will reportedly be actively involved in the project, and his manager, Vince Gerardis, is set to executive produce. The latest adaptation based on the author’s work, Nightflyers — inspired by Martin’s novella — is currently in production. The horror sci-fi series will premiere on SYFY this fall in the US and on Netflix worldwide.

The eighth and final season of Game of Thrones, based on Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire, will air in 2019 on HBO with spinoffs planned once the series ends.
