Filmmaker James Wan, director of the record-setting horror hits The Conjuring and The Conjuring 2, explores another dark corner of that universe with The Nun. Directed by Corin Hardy (The Hallow), the new fright-fest is produced by Wan and by Peter Safran, who has produced all the films in The Conjuring franchise.

When a young nun at a cloistered abbey in Romania takes her own life, a priest with a haunted past and a novitiate on the threshold of her final vows are sent by the Vatican to investigate. Together they uncover the order’s unholy secret. Risking not only their lives but their faith and their very souls, they confront a malevolent force in the form of the same demonic nun that first terrorized audiences in The Conjuring 2, as the abbey becomes a horrific battleground between the living and the damned.

The Nun stars Oscar-nominated Demian Bichir (A Better Life) as Father Burke, Taissa Farmiga (American Horror Story) as Sister Irene, Jonas Bloquet (Elle) as local villager Frenchie, Charlotte Hope (Game of Thrones) as the abbey’s Sister Victoria, Ingrid Bisu (Toni Erdmann) as Sister Oana, and Bonnie Aarons, reprising her Conjuring 2 role as the title character.

The Nun is the second spinoff to come from The Conjuring series, following in the footsteps of Annabelle, which also got a prequel film Annabelle: Creation that hit theaters last summer. What makes this spinoff perhaps so remarkable is that The Nun character was a late addition to last year’s The Conjuring 2, but was quickly a favorite by horror fans and was announced to have her own feature film in development just one week after The Conjuring 2 opened.

Gary Dauberman (It) wrote the screenplay and is serving as executive producer alongside Todd Williams with Michael Clear acting as co-producer. The story comes from Dauberman & Wan.

Joining Hardy behind the scenes are director of photography Maxime Alexandre (The Voices, Annabelle: Creation), production designer Jennifer Spence (Lights Out, the Insidious films), editor Michel Aller (Lights Out, Paranormal Activity: Ghost Dimension), and costume designer Sharon Gilham (Black Mirror).

The Nun is set for release on September 7, 2018, and is a New Line Cinema presentation. It is produced by Atomic Monster and Safran Company and will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures.
