Solo set to surprise premiere at Cannes Film Festival

The next spin-off feature in the massive Star Wars franchise, Solo, will be making its surprise debut at the upcoming Cannes Film Festival in May, according to Deadline.

Set around a young Han Solo and his early adventures with Wookie best friend Chewbacca, including their first encounters with the up-and-coming smuggler Lando Calrissian and his mentor Tobias Beckett, the film has been the subject of skeptic anticipation, with many fans questioning the need for a young Solo film since his character was already young in the original trilogy with other fans praising the visual styles, humor and action shown in the trailers thus far.

The film is currently set to debut May 25 in a nationwide release, but will now make a special early debut at Cannes on May 15, sources have revealed as the festival finalizes its competition roster. The majority of the lineup is currently the target of much speculation as there are still many unknowns as to what will premiere, with the opening-night film recently being announced to be the Spanish psychological thriller Everybody Knows, starring Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz.

Solo: A Star Wars Story will star Alden Ehrenreich (Hail, Caesar!) in a young iteration of the titular character alongside Joonas Suotamo in his third outing as the loveable Chewie, Woody Harrelson (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missourri) as Beckett, Donald Glover as a young Calrissian (Atlanta), and Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones) as love interest/childhood friend Qi’ra. The film is directed by Ron Howard (Apollo 13) following a directorial shift due to creative differences between Disney and previous directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller.
