Stranger Things’ Matthew Modine Joins Family Drama Miss Virginia

The Moving Picture Institute announced today that Matthew Modine is set to join Emmy-winning actress Uzo Aduba (Orange is the New Black) in the independent production of Miss Virginia, playing the lead supporting role of Congressman Cliff Williams. The film is set to commence production in April in Los Angeles.

Inspired by a true story, Miss Virginia follows a struggling inner-city single mother who moves her at-risk son from his dangerous neighborhood school to a safe — but expensive — one.  Sacrificing everything but still unable to make the tuition payment, she launches a movement that could save her son’s future and that of many other children in the community.

The film, to be directed by R.J. Daniel Hanna (Shelter), is produced by Erin O’Connor, Rob Pfaltzgraff, and Maurice Black of the Moving Picture Institute (2081 starring Armie Hammer, Julie Hagerty, and James Cosmo), Stacey Parks of Media Sparks Films and M. Elizabeth Hughes.

Modine most recently played the iconic role of Dr. Brenner in the hit Netflix series Stranger Things. Other recent roles include Captain Taylor in 47 Meters Down, and he will soon be seen in the highly-anticipated Sicario: Day of the Soldado. He is best known for his lead role of Joker in Stanley Kubrick’s Full Metal Jacket, and for Deputy Police Commissioner Foley in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises.
