Jeffrey Wright is Set to Play Hobie in The Goldfinch Adaptation

Westworld star Jeffrey Wright will play Hobie in the upcoming adaptation of The Goldfinch

Jeffrey Wright (The Hunger Games franchise, Westworld) is in negotiations for Warner Bros. and Amazon Studios’ movie adaptation of The Goldfinch, according to Variety. Wright, who will play the role of Hobie, joins Ansel Elgort (The Fault in Our Stars), who plays Theo in the film, Willa Fitzgerald (Little Women), who will play Kitsey Barbour, and Aneurin Barnard (Dunkirk), who will play Boris. The Goldfinch will be directed by John Crowley. The film is based on Donna Tartt’s Pulitzer Prize-winning book, The Goldfinch. Warner Bros. has yet to comment on the casting of Jeffrey Wright.

In the book, Hobie is Welty Blackwell’s partner, who is Pippa’s legal guardian. Hobie eventually provides a stable life for Theo.

In addition, THR reports that Luke Wilson (Roadies) has joined the cast of the film as Theo’s alcoholic actor father.

Described by the Pulitzer committee as being, “a beautifully written coming-of-age novel… that stimulates the mind and touches the heart,” The Goldfinch is Tartt’s first novel in more than a decade. Published in 2013, it is officially described as follows:

Theo Decker, a 13-year-old New Yorker, miraculously survives an accident that kills his mother. Abandoned by his father, Theo is taken in by the family of a wealthy friend. Bewildered by his strange new home on Park Avenue, disturbed by schoolmates who don’t know how to talk to him, and tormented above all by his longing for his mother, he clings to the one thing that reminds him of her: a small, mysteriously captivating painting that ultimately draws Theo into the underworld of art.

As an adult, Theo moves silkily between the drawing rooms of the rich and the dusty labyrinth of an antiques store where he works. He is alienated and in love–and at the center of a narrowing, ever more dangerous circle.

In the book, Hobie is the partner of Pippa’s legal guardian, Welty Blackwell, and provides stability for Theo. Jeffrey Wright is known for his work in the HBO series Westworld where he plays Bernard Lowe. He’s been seen in the role of Beetee in The Hunger Games franchise, as Valentin Narcisse in the seres Boardwalk Empire and as Jean-Michel Basquiat in Basquiat.
