Jumanji Tops Domestic Box Office, Insidious Opens in Second Place

In its third weekend, Columbia Pictures‘ Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle took over the domestic box office with $36 million to push its total to $244.4 million. Internationally, Jumanji added $70 million to push its overseas total to $275 million and worldwide total to $519 million. The film will open in China next week and in Japan in early April. Directed by Jake Kasdan, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle stars Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Kevin Hart, Karen Gillan, Nick Jonas, and Bobby Cannavale. The film was made for about $90 million.

Universal Pictures‘ Insidious: The Last Key opened in second place in North America with an estimated $29.3 million from 3,116 theaters, an average of $9,392 per theater. With this weekend’s opening, the nearly seven-year-old franchise has grossed more than $400 million worldwide, with Insidious: The Last Key actually outperforming the opening weekend of the previous film, Insidious: Chapter 3 ($22.6 million). Insidious: The Last Key also began its international release with $20.1 million from more than 5,700 screens in 33 markets. Made for just $10 million, Insidious: The Last Key received a B- CinemaScore from audiences. Directed by Adam Robitel, the film stars Lin Shaye, Angus Sampson, Leigh Whannell, Josh Stewart, Caitlin Gerard, Kirk Acevedo, Javier Botet, Bruce Davison, Spencer Locke, Tessa Ferrer, Ava Kolker, and Marcus Henderson.

After reigning for three weeks, Walt Disney Pictures and Lucasfilm‘s Star Wars: The Last Jedi dropped two spots to third with $23.6 million its fourth weekend, for a total of $572.5 million domestically. Internationally, the film debuted in China with $28.7 million and saw a weekend of $64.7 million to push its overseas total to $632.7 million. Star Wars: The Last Jedi has now earned $1.205 billion worldwide and has passed both Captain America: Civil War ($1.153 billion) and Minions ($1.159 billion) to climb to the 13th spot on the all-time global list. Domestically, The Last Jedi now stands as the No. 6 release of all-time. Written and directed by Rian Johnson, Star Wars: The Last Jedi stars Mark Hamill, the late Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Lupita Nyong’o, Oscar Isaac, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Gwendoline Christie, Andy Serkis, Benicio Del Toro, Laura Dern, and Kelly Marie Tran.

Remaining in fourth place was The Greatest Showman (20th Century Fox), starring Hugh Jackman, Zac Efron, Michelle Williams, Rebecca Ferguson, and Zendaya. The musical grossed $13.8 million and has earned $75.9 million after three weeks. Internationally, the film earned $24 million in 74 markets to take its overseas total to $74.5 million and global total to $150.4 million. The Greatest Showman, directed by Michael Gracey, was made for $84 million.

The fifth spot belong to Universal Pictures’ Pitch Perfect 3, which added $10.2 million this weekend to take its total to $85.9 million after three weeks. The film’s international total is up to $55 million, for a worldwide sum of $141 million. The sequel, made for $45 million, was directed by Trish Sie and stars Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson, Hailee Steinfeld, Brittany Snow, Anna Camp, John Lithgow, DJ Khaled, Hana Mae Lee, Ruby Rose, Alexis Knapp, Chrissie Fit, Ester Dean, Shelley Regner, Kelley Jakle, John Michael Higgins, and Elizabeth Banks.

In sixth place, 20th Century Fox and Blue Sky Studios’ Ferdinand collected $7.7 million its fourth weekend. The animated film has grossed $70.5 million domestically. Internationally, Ferdinand grossed another $23.3 million and now sits at $112.8 million total. The worldwide earnings for the film are at $183.3 million. Directed by Carlos Saldanha, the $111 million-budgeted film features the voices of John Cena, Kate McKinnon, Anthony Anderson, Bobby Cannavale, Peyton Manning, Gina Rodriguez, Miguel Angel Silvestre, David Tennant, Flula Borg, Jerrod Carmichael, Daveed Diggs, Gabriel Iglesias, Juanes, Boris Kodjoe, Karla Martínez, and more.

STXfilms’ Molly’s Game increased its theater count to 1,608 and climbed five places to seventh with $7 million. It has earned $14.2 million after two weeks. Written and directed by Aaron Sorkin, the film stars Jessica Chastain, Idris Elba, Kevin Costner, Michael Cera, Jeremy Strong, Chris O’Dowd, and Bill Camp.

The Darkest Hour (Focus Features) also increased its theaters count to 1,733 and remained in eighth place with $6.4 million to bring its seven-week total to $28.4 million. Directed by Joe Wright, the drama stars Gary Oldman, Kristin Scott Thomas, Lily James, Stephen Dillane, Ronald Pickup, and Ben Mendelsohn.

Disney•Pixar’s Coco added $5.5 million its seventh weekend in ninth place, for a domestic total of $192.1 million. Internationally, Coco brought in $19.9 million and has grossed $397 million, for a worldwide total of $589.1 million, with $180.9 million coming from China and $57.8 million from Mexico. Directed by Lee Unkrich and co-directed by Adrian Molina, Coco features the voices of Anthony Gonzalez, Benjamin Bratt, Gael Garcia Bernal, Edward James Olmos, Alanna Ubach, and more.

Ridley Scott’s All the Money in the World (TriStar Pictures) rounded out the top ten with $3.6 million this weekend for a total of $20.1 million. Internationally, the film has grossed $7.5 million. It stars Michelle Williams, Christopher Plummer, and Mark Wahlberg.
