Academy Announces 20 Movies in the Running for Visual Effects Oscar

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the 20 films that remain in the running for the Visual Effects category for the 90th Academy Awards. The films that remain in contention are:

  • Beauty and the Beast
  • Blade Runner 2049
  • Dunkirk
  • ‘Ghost in the Shell
  • Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
  • Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle
  • Justice League
  • Kong: Skull Island
  • Life
  • Logan
  • Ojka
  • Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales
  • The Shape of Water
  • Spider-Man Homecoming
  • Star Wars: The Last Jedi
  • Thor: Ragnarok
  • Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets
  • War for the Planet of the Apes
  • Wonder Woman

The Visual Effects Branch Executive Committee of The Academy determined the preliminary shortlist and will select the 10 films that will advance to nominations voting later this month. Nominations for the 90th Oscars will be announced on Tuesday, January 23, 2018.

It was announced this morning that the Oscars have moved up half an hour, beginning at 8:00pm EST/5:00pm PST on Sunday, March 4, 2018 on ABC. Late-night talk show favorite Jimmy Kimmel will return to host, and Michael De Luca and Jennifer Todd will return to produce.
