New Line Cinema has set a release date for the IT sequel
A sequel to the monster hit IT is on the way and New Line Cinema has given it a release date. The IT sequel will be written by Gary Dauberman and directed by Andy Muschietti, who directed the first film. The IT sequel will also see the return of the child actors from the first film. The horror sequel will make its debut on September 6, 2019 and will be shown in IMAX. In other release date news, the Untitled Warner Bros. animation film that was going to premiere on June 1, 2018 is now titled Teen Titans Go! and will hit theaters on July 27, 2018.
As readers of the original text know, most of the Losers’ Club all move away from Derry, Maine with one notable exception: Mike Hanlon, who stays in the town as a gatekeeper for Derry and to bring the group back together 27 years later. Muschietti told EW that the child actors will be an integral part of the IT sequel and that Mike’s character in the sequel will be a bit different from the book.
IT debuted on September 8 to the tune of $123.1 million opening weekend gross, the highest opening weekend ever for a September release, for a fall release, and for a horror movie. It clocked in just $9 million behind Deadpool for the second-highest opening for an R-rated movie. The film added another $30 million its third weekend to take its North American total to $266 million. Internationally, IT grossed another $38.3 million from 12,275 screens in 59 markets. The film, which cost just $35 million to make, has now grossed $211.7 million overseas and $478 million worldwide!
Directed by Andrés Muschietti, IT stars Bill Skarsgård as the story’s central villain, Pennywise the clown, as well as Jaeden Lieberher, Jeremy Ray Taylor, Sophia Lillis, Finn Wolfhard, Wyatt Oleff, Chosen Jacobs, Jack Dylan Grazer and Nicholas Hamilton.
