Jon Bernthal joins Ryan Gosling in the cast of Damian Chazelle’s First Man

Jon Bernthal (The Walking DeadThe Punisher) has been cast in the upcoming Damian Chazelle-helmed film First Man, about NASA’s mission to land a man on the moon, according to DeadlineFirst Man is looking at a fall shoot and an October release in 2018. The cast includes Ryan Gosling (The Nice GuysDrive), who previously worked with Chazelle on La La Land, Corey Stoll (Ant-ManThe Strain), Jason Clarke (Zero Dark ThirtyDawn of the Planet of the Apes), Claire Foy (Wolf HallThe Crown) and Kyle Chandler (Super 8Friday Night Lights)

Universal Pictures release, First Man is based on James Hansen’s biography “First Man: A Life Of Neil A. Armstrong,” the riveting story of NASA’s mission to land a man on the moon, focusing on Neil Armstrong and the years 1961-1969. Described as “a visceral, first-person account,” the movie aims to explore the sacrifices and the cost—on Armstrong and on the nation—of one of the most dangerous missions in history.

Written by Academy Award winner Josh Singer (Spotlight), the First Man movie will be produced by Wyck Godfrey & Marty Bowen (The Twilight SagaThe Fault in Our Stars) through their Temple Hill Entertainment banner, alongside Chazelle and Gosling. Isaac Klausner (The Fault in Our Stars) will executive produce. DreamWorks Pictures is co-financing the film.

Jon Bernthal is known for his work in films like The Wolf of Wall Street and Baby Driver as well as playing Shane in the TV series The Walking Dead and Frank Castle/Punisher in the Marvel/Netflix series Daredevil and he will reprise his role in the upcoming solo show, Marvel’s The Punisher.
