The Raid Remake Gets a Writer

At this point, it certainly can’t be a coincidence how much news we’ve been hearing about Gareth Evan’s martial arts movie The Raid (released by Sony Pictures Classics on March 23) and its just-announced sequel. Just one day after Sony picked up the rights to the latter, we get our first news on Screen Gems’ planned English language remake, courtesy Deadline, as they’ve hired screenwriter Brad Ingelsby to write it.

Ingelsby may not be a name that’s very well known but he wrote the Black List screenplay Out of the Furnace (formerly The Low Dweller), which is being directed for Relativity Media by Scott Cooper (Crazy Heart) and he recently sold a script called “Run All Night” to Warner Bros. A few years back, Ingelsby had been hired to adapt the DC/Wildstorm comic Sleeper to the big screen also for Warner Bros. though there’s been no recent news on that one.

Nothing is yet known of how the Jakarta, Indonesia-based police raid action movie will be translated to an English language feature, and it may be some time before we hear word of a director or cast–they need to have a script in hand first–but one imagines that if The Raid makes as big a wave in the States as Sony seems to think it will, this remake will be moving through the process fairly quickly.
