Gareth Huw Evans’ Indonesian martial arts flick The Raid is still over a month away from being released domestically, yet Deadline is reporting that Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions Group has pre-bought the U.S., Latin American and Spanish rights to its sequel, tentatively titled Berandal.
The film’s star, martial arts sensation Iko Uwais, will be returning for the second movie, which presumably will follow directly after the events of the movie which won the Midnight Madness Award at the Toronto International Film Festival last year. Production will begin in Jakarta later this year. with a larger budget although the plot is being kept under wraps.
Screen Gems still has plans to do an English language remake of the original Indonesian action film, which follows a SWAT team’s raid of a building filled with criminals and killers in order to capture a ruthless crimelord, although no director or cast has been announced as of yet.
The Raid comes out in select cities on March 23, and you can read our review and watch our interview with Gareth Evans from Sundance in which he talked about preparations for the sequel here.
