Edgar Wright Might do a Baby Driver Sequel

Filmmaker Edgar Wright has made a career out of unique and noteworthy films, which haven’t turned into anything beyond the singular film experience. His latest film could be the one to end the cycle, however, as Wright tells the Empire Podcast that he’s mulled over a Baby Driver sequel.

“The studio have asked me to think about writing a sequel and it is funny that it is one of the ones that I might do a sequel to, because I think there’s somewhere more to go with it in terms of the characters. Especially, Baby has got to a new place.”

Wright elaborated on why there hasn’t been a follow-up to the likes of Shaun of the Dead, The World’s End, and Hot Fuzz (though admitting there could be a sequel there), and said:

“Most sequels you have to contrive something so they go back to square one, unless there’s somewhere deeper for them to go… I think with Baby Driver there’s more that you can do in that realm, and I sort of have an idea that if you did another one you would subvert his involvement in the crime in a different way so he’s not kind of like the apprentice anymore.”

In Baby Driver, a talented, young getaway driver (Ansel Elgort) relies on the beat of his personal soundtrack to be the best in the game. When he meets the girl of his dreams (Lily James), Baby sees a chance to ditch his criminal life and make a clean getaway. But after being coerced into working for a crime boss (Two-time Oscar winner Kevin Spacey), he must face the music when a doomed heist threatens his life, love and freedom.

Baby Driver also stars Jon Hamm (Mad Men), Eiza Gonzalez (From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series), Jon Bernthal (Marvel’s The Punisher) and Academy Award winner Jamie Foxx (Ray). The film arrived June 28 and has brought in $41.9 million at the domestic box office so far.
