Gina Prince-Bythewood to Direct Sony’s Silver Sable and Black Cat Movie

Earlier this year, news broke that Sony was developing another Spider-Man spin-off film with a Silver Sable and Black Cat centric film. Now, The Hollywood Reporter brings word that director Gina Prince-Bythewood (Love and Basketball, The Secret Life of Bees) has been tapped to direct the film, which will be titled Silver and Black.

Matt Tolmach and Amy Pascal will produce the film, which has a script by Chris Yost (Thor: The Dark World, the upcoming Thor: Ragnarok) and a previous draft by Westworld‘s Lisa Joy-Nolan. Production on the film is gearing up to begin this fall.

Created by Tom DeFalco and Ron Frenz, Silver Sable made her comic book debut in 1985’s The Amazing Spider-Man #265. Hailing from the fictional European nation Symkaria, Sable is an expertly trained mercenary whose company, Silver Sable International, funds a team called the Wild Pack. Although the Wild Pack was founded by Sable’s father, she herself becomes its leader.

Black Cat, meanwhile, dates back to 1979’s The Amazing Spider-Man #149. Created by Marv Wolfman and Keith Pollard, Felicia Hardy is an expert burglar who has the ability to manipulate probabilities, effectively bringing bad luck to those around her. Also she was never explicitly referred to as such, Felicity Jones’ The Amazing Spider-Man 2 character was planned as an alternate version of Hardy.

Silver and Black along with the upcoming Venom film, featuring Tom Hardy as the title hero and Ruben Fleischer as director, will be in a separate universe from this summer’s Spider-Man: Homecoming, which is contained in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
