Here We Go Again! Mamma Mia Sequel Hits in 2018

Universal has slated a Mamma Mia sequel for a July 20, 2018 release

Universal Pictures has just announced a surprise Mamma Mia sequel! The cast of the 2008 adaptation of the stage hit musical are all expected to return for the film alongside a few new, yet to be revealed additions. Titled Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again!, the Mamma Mia sequel will feature ABBA songs not featured in the first film—along with some reprised favorites. Ol Parker, writer of The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, is set to write and direct.

Timed to coincide with the tenth anniversary of the original film’s release, the Mamma Mia sequel promises to return audiences to the magical Greek island of Kalokairi. Look for Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again! to hit theaters on July 20, 2018.

The Mamma Mia sequel once more brings the producers of the original film, Littlestar’s Judy Craymer and Playtone’s Gary Goetzman, together. Craymer is also the creator and producer of the smash-hit stage musical. Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus are aboard again to provide music and lyrics and serve as executive producers.

The original Mamma Mia stars Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Stellan Skarsgård, Julie Walters, Dominic Cooper, Amanda Seyfried and Christine Baranski. Check back for casting updates as they become available.

The July 20, 2018 release date has the Mamma Mia sequel opening almost exactly ten years after the original’s July 18 release. It also pits the Universal Pictures release against 20th Century Fox‘s Alita: Battle Angel. Directed by Robert Rodriguez, the live-action take on the science fiction manga. Rosa Salazar is set to play the title role, along with Academy Award winner Christoph Waltz, Jackie Earl Haley, Ed Skrein, Eiza Gonzales, Lana Condor, Leonard Wu, Jennifer Connelly, and Mahershala Ali.
