Looking for any way to get away from the life and town he was born into, Tripp (Till), a high school senior, builds a Monster Truck from bits and pieces of scrapped cars. After an accident at a nearby oil-drilling site displaces a strange and subterranean creature with a taste and a talent for speed, Tripp may have just found the key to getting out of town and a most unlikely friend.

“I wanted to make a live-action movie for awhile,” director Chris Wedge told CS when we visited the Monster Trucks movie set.. “I thought about this idea for a couple weeks and came up with a take for it that really appealed to me. It’s a big adventure movie. It’s a fun, crazy concept, but I wanted a grounded story. I know from animation that you can have all the crazy color and design and motion you want out of it, but at the end of the day all the audience wants is character. We found a great character story at the center of this thing. It’s basically the story of a kid and a monster, which may be the first and only friend he’s had. So it’s got a lot of heart, a lot of comedy and a lot of surprising action.”
