Tim Story to Direct Corduroy Movie

A Corduroy movie is on the way from CBS Films and director Tim Story

For more than half a century, the exploits of a department store teddy bear named Corduroy have delighted young readers around the world. Today, Variety reports that a Corduroy movie is now in the works at CBS Films. What’s more, it already has Tim Story (Fantastic Four, Think Like a Man) set to direct.

Author and illustrator Don Freeman released Corduroy in 1968. It tells of the titular plush bear who is nearly purchased by a young girl, Lisa. Lisa’s mother notices that Corduroy is missing a button, however, and the pair leave the poor bear to worry that no one will want him. That night, Corduroy sets out across the department store to recover his missing button.

Freeman himself offered a sequel book, A Pocket for Corduroy, ten years later. Freeman passed away in 1978, the same year that Pocket hit shelves. Since then, illustrated Corduroy adventures have been released that continue the exploits of the curious bear.

Tim Story most recently directed Ride Along 2, which hit theaters earlier this year. A followup to Story’s own 2014 comedy, Ride Along 2 saw the return of Kevin Hart and Ice Cube as police officers James Payton and Ben Barber. Collectively, both Ride Along films brought in more than $278 million at the worldwide box office. Plans for a Ride Along 3 were announced last month with Story expected to again direct.

Alex Ginno and Mark Ross will oversee the Corduroy movie for CBS Films. No screenwriter is as of yet attached, but check back for updates as they become available.
