Deadpool 2 loses composer Junkie XL
It looks like we’re seeing more fallout from director Tim Miller’s departure from 20th Century Fox‘s Deadpool sequel due to creative differences. Word comes from acclaimed composer Junkie XL (real name Tom Holkenborg) via his Facebook page that he has left Deadpool 2 in solidarity with Miller. Check out his full message below.
While the first Deadpool was perhaps better known for its needle drops (DMX, “Angel of the Morning”) than its score, Junkie XL made a big contribution to the film. He’s in no danger of running out of work though, as he’s set to score Legendary’s Spectral and Godzilla 2, Sony’s The Dark Tower and DC Films’ Justice League. He’s best known for his work on Mad Max: Fury Road and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
As for Miller’s replacement director, Deadpool 2 may have already found one in David Leitch (John Wick) of 87Eleven Action Design, although Drew Goddard (Cabin in the Woods) and TV director Magnus Martens (“Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”) are also supposedly in contention.
Since releasing John Wick in 2014, Leitch and Stahleski have been busy on a number of projects, including adaptations of Valiant‘s Bloodshot and Image Comics‘ Cowboy Ninja Viking (the latter of which has Chris Pratt attached to play the lead). Before all of that, though, 2017 is bringing us both the Leitch-helmed The Coldest City, starring Charlize Theron, James McAvoy, and the Stahleski-helmed John Wick: Chapter 2. Set for a February 10, 2017 release, the sequel sees the return of Reeves opposite Common, John Leguizamo, Lance Reddick, Tom Sadowski, Bridget Moynahan, Ruby Rose, Riccardo Scamarcio, Peter Stormare and Ian McShane.
The original Deadpool brought in over $782 million worldwide and received primarily positive reviews from fan and critic alike. Screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, “the real heroes here” who penned the first film, are returning to write the sequel. Reynolds is again serving as a producer on Deadpool 2 alongside X-Men franchise caretakers Simon Kinberg and Lauren Shuler Donner.
