Uncharted Director Revealed as Movie is Put on the Fast Track

Sony Pictures has set the Uncharted director! According to Deadline, the studio has hired Shawn Levy (Stranger ThingsNight at the Museum films, Real Steel) to direct the video game adaptation. The film was recently removed from the studio’s release calendar – it was previously looking at a June 30, 2017 release date. Joe Carnahan (NarcThe Grey) is writing the script for the film.

Based on the action-adventure video game Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune from Naughty Dog and Sony Interactive, the story follows a descendant of explorer Sir Francis Drake, a treasure hunter named Nate Drake who believes he has learned the whereabouts of El Dorado, the fabled South American golden city, from a cursed golden statue. The search becomes competitive when a rival hunter joins the fray, then is escalated when creatures — actually mutated descendants of Spaniards and Nazis — begin attacking those hoping to learn the treasure’s true secrets.

There have been three sequels to Drake’s Fortune, with the latest, Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, having hit stores in May of 2016.

Previous drafts of the script were written by Academy Award-winning writer Mark Boal (The Hurt Locker, Zero Dark Thirty), Oscar nominee David O. Russell, Doctor Strange‘s Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer, Safe House‘s David Guggenheim, and Cormac and Marianne Wibberley of National Treasure fame.

Uncharted is an Arad/Atlas Entertainment Production, with Charles Roven, Avi Arad, Alex Gartner, and Ari Arad producing.
