Suicide Squad Wins a Third Straight Weekend at the Box Office

Warner Bros. Pictures‘ Suicide Squad won a third straight weekend at the box office, adding $20.7 million domestically for a total of $262.3 million. Internationally, the David Ayer-directed comic book adaptation earned $38 million this weekend to surpass the $300 million mark with $310.4 million. The worldwide total for the film now stands at $572.7 million.

The top 10 markets for Suicide Squad are as follows: UK – $36.1 million; Brazil – $27.8 million; Mexico – $23.6 million; Russia – $22.6 million; Australia – $21.1 million; France – $15.1 million; Korea – $14.2 million; Spain – $9.7 million; Taiwan – $8.4 million; Italy – $7.4 million; Indonesia – $6.8 million; and Germany – $6.8 million. It will open next in Japan on September 10. 

Made for $175 million before marketing expenses, Suicide Squad stars Will Smith (AliThe Pursuit of Happyness), Margot Robbie (The Wolf of Wall StreetFocus), Joel Kinnaman (Netflix’s “House of Cards”), Viola Davis (The HelpDoubt), Jai Courtney (Insurgent), Jay Hernandez (Takers), Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (Thor: The Dark World), Ike Barinholtz (Neighbors), Scott Eastwood (Fury), Cara Delevingne (Paper Towns), Adam Beach (Cowboys & Aliens), and Karen Fukuhara in her feature film debut.

Remaining in second place, Sony Pictures‘ Sausage Party grossed $15.3 million its second weekend, a drop of about 55% in ticket sales. Made for just $19 million, the R-rated animated comedy has earned $65.3 million in North America. Directed by Conrad Vernon and Greg Tiernan, Sausage Party is voiced by Seth Rogen, Kristen Wiig, Salma Hayek, Edward Norton, David Krumholtz, Nick Kroll, Michael Cera, James Franco, Jonah Hill, Craig Robinson, Bill Hader, Anders Holm, Paul Rudd, and Danny McBride.

Warner Bros.’ War Dogs opened in third place with an estimated $14.3 million from 3,258 theaters, an average of $4,389 per theater. The international weekend result for War Dogs came in at $6.5 million from 2,700 theaters in 31 markets. Receiving a B CinemaScore from audiences, the Todd Phillips-directed film stars Jonah Hill, Miles Teller, Ana de Armas, Kevin Pollak and Bradley Cooper.

The fourth animated feature from LAIKAKubo and the Two Strings (Focus Features) debuted in fourth place with an estimated $12.6 million from 3,260 theaters, an average of $3,868. It’s the lowest opening of a LAIKA/Focus film so far, trailing The Boxtrolls ($17.3 million), Coraline ($16.8 million), and ParaNorman ($14 million). Produced for about $60 million, the Travis Knight film received an A CinemaScore. It features the voices of Art Parkinson, Matthew McConaughey, Charlize Theron, Rooney Mara, Ralph Fiennes, George Takei, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa and Brenda Vaccaro.

Opening in fifth place was Paramount Pictures’ Ben-Hur, which earned just $11.4 million from 3,084 theaters, an average of $3,680 per theater. Internationally, the film grossed $10.7 million in 23 markets. Made for a hefty $100 million, the Timur Bekmambetov-directed film received an A- CinemaScore. Jack Huston, Toby Kebbell, Toby Kebbell, Morgan Freeman, Rodrigo Santoro, Nazanin Boniadi, Ayelet Zorer, and Sofia Black-D’Elia star.

Dropping three spots to third place was Disney’s Pete’s Dragon, which added $11.3 million its second weekend for a domestic total of $42.9 million. Overseas, the film has grossed $14.2 million and the worldwide sum is at $57.1 million. Made for $65 million, Pete’s Dragon was directed by David Lowery and stars Bryce Dallas Howard, Oakes Fegley, Wes Bentley, Karl Urban, Oona Laurence and Robert Redford.

STX Entertainment’s Bad Moms continued to impress its fourth weekend with another $8 million. The $20 million, R-rated comedy has now earned $85.8 million in North America. Internationally, the film has reached $20.6 million for a worldwide total of $106.4 million. Directed by Jon Lucas and Scott Moore, Bad Moms stars Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell, Kathryn Hahn, Jay Hernandez, Annie Mumolo, Jada Pinkett Smith and Christina Applegate.

The top 10 was rounded out by Jason Bourne ($7.98 million; $140.8 million total after four weeks), The Secret Life of Pets ($5.77 million; $346.7 million after seven weeks), and Florence Foster Jenkins ($4.3 million; $14.4 million total after two weeks).
