UPDATE: Snow White and the Huntsman Coming to Theaters

UPDATE: Universal Pictures has reportedly picked up the project.

Heat Vision is reporting that Snow White and the Huntsman, a new take on the classic fairy tale, is making the rounds at studios. Rupert Sanders is attached to direct a script by Evan Daughterty. Joe Roth (Alice in Wonderland) will produce.

The trade says that the only studio not looking at the project is Disney, which already has its own Snow White project, Snow and the Seven, in the works with Francis Lawrence directing.

Snow White and the Huntsman features an expanded role for the Huntsman. In the fairy tale, he is ordered to take Snow White into the woods and kill her, but instead lets her go. In the new take, the Huntsman is not a love interest but acts more as a mentor, teaching Snow White to fight and survive.

Disney is also developing Maleficent, with Angelina Jolie and Tim Burton, and a new take on “Cinderella.”

Brett Ratner and Relativity are developing a Snow White film as well which is described as a more straight-forward retelling.

Sanders is best known for his commercial work and Daugherty wrote drafts for He-Man and the Masters of the Universe and Shrapnel.
