James Badge Dale to Lead The Empty Man Movie

James Badge Dale will headline 20th Century Fox’s The Empty Man movie

James Badge Dale (13 Hours, The Walk) has taken a leading role in 20th Century Fox‘s The Empty Man movie. The Hollywood Reporter has the news, bringing word that production is likely to begin this fall in South Africa. David Prior, most well known for putting together exemplary bonus content on DVD and Blu-rays (including features for David Fincher’s Zodiac, The Social Network, and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) is writing and directing the Empty Man movie, which is based on a BOOM! Studios comic book miniseries.

Released in 2014, The Empty Man was written by Eisner Award winner Cullen Bunn and illustrated by Vanesa R. Del Rey. It is officially described as follows:

It’s been one year since the first reported case of the Empty Man disease, and no drug has been able to slow its progress. The cause is unknown, and the symptoms include fits of rage, hideous hallucinations, suicidal dementia, followed by death, or a near lifeless, ’empty’ state of catatonia. As murder cults rise nationwide, the FBI and CDC enter a joint investigation of the Empty Man, hoping to piece together clues to stop the cult and uncover a cure.

It is noted in today’s trade report that the script for the Empty Man movie departs quite a bit from the original comic.

BOOM!’s Stephen Christy and Ross Richie are producing The Empty Man movie, which is just one of a growing roster of Boom! Studios projects in development at Fox. Also on the way are feature film versions of titles like James Wan’s Malignant Man, as well as The Foundation, Imagine Agents, and Lumberjanes.
