Deadpool Box Office Update: The Merc with a Mouth is Setting Records

The Friday Deadpool box office results are in, and the Merc with a Mouth set a new record for a Friday in February with an estimated $47.5 million from 3,558 theaters (including the record $12.7 million from Thursday previews)! The 20th Century Fox comic book adaptation easily beat Fifty Shades of Grey‘s previous record of $30.2 million last February. The Tim Miller-directed film could earn over $110 million for the three-day portion of the four-day Presidents’ Day weekend and possibly as much as $130 million for the four days. Fifty Shades of Grey holds the four-day Valentine’s Day/Presidents’ Day weekend record with $93 million. The Deadpool box office is on track to make it the biggest opening for an R-rated film and the biggest February opening of all time.

20th Century Fox had previously projected that Deadpool, which cost about $58 million to make, should be able to top $65 million or more over the four days, so this is quite a win for the studio, crew and cast.

Deadpool stars Ryan Reynolds stars as the title character alongside T.J. Miller as Weasel, Gina Carano as Angel Dust, Brianna Hildebrand as Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Morena Baccarin as Copycat, and Ed Skrein as Ajax. The film also features the mutant Colossus, voiced by Serbian actor Stefan Kapicic.

Based upon Marvel Comics’ most unconventional anti-hero, Deadpool tells the origin story of former Special Forces operative turned mercenary Wade Wilson, who after being subjected to a rogue experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers, adopts the alter ego Deadpool. Armed with his new abilities and a dark, twisted sense of humor, Deadpool hunts down the man who nearly destroyed his life.
