Lionsgate Shifts Release for The Divergent Series: Ascendant and Power Rangers

New release dates for The Divergent Series: Ascendant and Power Rangers announced

As 2015 winds down, Lionsgate is already looking to the future and have adjusted the release of two of their high profile 2017 features.

The Divergent Series: Ascendant has shifted from its original release date of March 24, 2017 to June 9, 2017, where it will face World War Z 2 that weekend. In addition, the big screen reboot of Power Rangers has moved from its January 13, 2017 release to that just-vacated March 24 slot. It will face Universal’s reboot of The Mummy on that date.

Based on author Veronica Roth’s New York Times best-seller, Ascendant is being directed by Robert Schwentke from a screenplay by Noah Oppenheim and Adam Cooper & Bill Collage and Stephen Chbosky. Ascendant will be the fourth installment in the blockbuster action adventure franchise which stars Golden Globe nominee Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Academy Award winner Octavia Spencer, and the Oscar-nominated Naomi Watts. Golden Globe-nominated actor Jeff Daniels also joins the cast for the third and fourth films in the franchise.

Dacre Montgomery will lead the new team of Power Rangers as Jason aka the Red Ranger with RJ Cyler (Me and Earl and The Dying Girl) as Billy the Blue Ranger, Naomi Scott (The Martian, “Terra Nova”) as Kimberly aka the Pink Ranger, Ludi Lin as Zack aka the Black Ranger, and musician Becky G. as Trini aka the Yellow Ranger. Screenwriters Zack Stentz and Ashley Miller (X-Men: First Class, Thor) wrote the screenplay for Power Rangers which will be directed by Project Almanac’s Dean Israelite.
